The family of Kate Greenaway - children's book illustrator
Pam Griffiths
Kate Greenaway, 1846-1901, was a well-known illustrator of children's books. She remained single, but her sister - Frances Greenaway - married Edward Dadd. Their son married my great aunt and to their descendants has come a collection of documents and letters which either belonged originally to Kate or were to do with members of her family. These are now all lodged at the Society of Genealogists in London under the heading Greenaway Small Collection. Included are wills and other probate documents, particulars of sales, apprentice indentures, letters from mid-19th century Canada to Kate's grandmother Rebecca Jones, letters to Kate from James Luther Greenway in 1901 with a lot of - albeit unsubstantiated - genealogical data about the Greenaways, along with sheets of notes about various branches of interconnected families, some from a later date, some much earlier.
A list of the documents and a brief abstract of what they contain can be found at Greenaway Catalogue and an all-in-one tree for Kate and her connections at Greenaway tree. Surnames appearing include: Smith, Wells, Peacock, Potter, Jones, Dadd, Thorne, Partridge, Shurgall, Eatwell, Burch and Fuller. In the main, the tree is drawn up from information contained in the documents, but a little has been added from other sources for clarity.
